James Talarico Defends Abortion Rights, Faith at CNN Town Hall
James Talarico, the Democratic Senate candidate in Texas, took questions Wednesday from Republican and independent voters at a CNN and Jubilee town hall. A Catholic voter challenged his view on the Bible and abortion.
Talarico told voter Jody Hunt the Bible is silent on abortion.
Hunt cited the commandment against killing and said Catholics take insult.
Talarico said he opposes abolishing ICE and calls himself a border security Democrat.
He attributed his absence of more than a week to the flu.
Why it matters: Democrats need a net gain of four seats for a Senate majority. They have not won statewide in Texas in three decades.
Talarico proposed treating abortion as a public health problem to reduce abortions.
He backed Texas oil and gas and called the national debt an emergency.
Left coverage, 2 sources: The left sees a candidate reaching across the aisle on faith, abortion and the border while answering what he calls conspiracy theories.
