Ousted Paraguay President Peña Placed Under House Arrest
Prosecutors placed ousted Paraguayan President Santiago Peña under house arrest Friday, shortly after the Senate removed him over Ueno Bank's collapse.
44 senators present all voted to remove Peña for misconduct in office.
Prosecutors also ordered the arrest of former central bank chief Carlos Carvallo.
$355 million from the state pension fund went to Ueno, beyond legal limits, lawmakers allege.
Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in to serve until August 2028.
Why it matters: Regulators seized Ueno three days before the vote, freezing accounts for nearly half the country. Lawmakers say Peña used his influence to channel public funds into the bank.
$800 million-plus in public money fueled Ueno's rapid growth.
97% of customers are covered by deposit insurance, the central bank says.
Peña denies wrongdoing; Alliana is also under investigation.
