Court Filing: Staff Warned Pike's Vein Might Have Blown
Tennessee's execution team struggled to place IV lines in Christa Pike and warned a vein might have ruptured. Her attorney made the claims in a court filing Thursday.
10 needles were used across several sites on both arms, attorney Randy Spivey wrote.
6 minutes to set the right-arm IV; the left took nearly an hour.
7:34 p.m.: Pike said her arm felt about to bust and burned.
10 days in the hospital, partly on a ventilator, before returning to prison.
Why it matters: Pike, 50, is the only prisoner in modern times to survive a full lethal injection dose. Gov. Bill Lee has paused all Tennessee executions pending a review.
State protocol does not say what to do if a second dose fails.
Tony Carruthers also survived an attempt in May after IV failures.
