Pope Leo Needs No Further Cancer Treatment, Doctors Say
Pope Leo will not need further therapy after surgery for lung cancer, his doctors said in a Vatican statement Wednesday.
Oct. 13 surgery removed the lower lobe of his right lung.
Lab tests confirmed pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the most common lung cancer.
Doctors said the disease remained localized.
71-year-old Leo held a public audience eight days after surgery.
Why it matters: Leo leads 1.4 billion Catholics and is the youngest pope in decades. His diagnosis raised questions about how his papacy would proceed.
Wednesday's audience was his first since Oct. 7.
He greeted pilgrims in seven languages instead of the usual nine.
