Cyberattack Heats French Supermarket Fridges to 50C, Spoiling Food
Hackers remotely forced refrigeration systems in hundreds of French supermarkets into defrost mode overnight Sunday. Stores had to throw out fresh and frozen products.
- 150 to 200 Intermarché stores were affected, the chain said.
- About 100 Coopérative U stores were also hit.
- 50C air pushed fridge interiors to 36C, according to the Daily Mail.
- E. Leclerc said hackers breached one of its refrigeration equipment suppliers.
Why it matters: The attackers did not steal data or demand ransom, according to reports. They destroyed perishable inventory through connected equipment.
- Intermarché owner Groupement Mousquetaires estimates losses of several million euros.
- Intermarché warned some insurance policies may not cover this type of incident.
