Rubio Pressures Russia to Disclose Information on Lab Death

A researcher at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Shelekhov, Siberia died after exposure to a pathogen identified by regional officials as likely plague. Russian federal health authorities have not publicly confirmed the cause of death.

• 28-year-old Darya Shipilova was hospitalized September 29 and died two days later.
• 197 people with potential exposure are under medical observation, over 100 in hospital wards.
• 4 hospitals in the Irkutsk region were closed for quarantine, patient visits prohibited.
• Rospotrebnadzor stated no accidents involving pathogenic microorganisms occurred at the institute.

Why it matters: Pneumonic plague is the most virulent form of the disease and transmits via respiratory particles between people.

• Fatality rate drops to roughly 17% if identified within 24 hours and treated with antibiotics.
• Reports from the region describe antibiotic shortages as residents overwhelm pharmacies.
