Trump's Iran Conflict Weighs on Republicans Before Midterms
The Senate voted 49-50 Thursday to reject a war powers resolution directing Trump to end the Iran war. It was the 12th time such a resolution has failed.
- Gas has risen 40 cents this month to roughly $4.50 a gallon; diesel sits at $6.50.
- Trump's approval stands at 32% in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
- Democrats lead the congressional generic ballot by a high single-digit margin on average.
- Susan Collins was the only vulnerable Republican senator to vote for the resolution.
Why it matters: Republican candidates in close races are caught between opposing the war rhetorically and voting against Trump in Congress. Ohio Sen. Jon Husted told Politico the war 'needs to come to an end as quickly as possible,' then voted against the resolution two days later.
- Iowa Reps. Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks voted this month to end or constrain the war.
- Trump rejected Iran's latest ceasefire proposal Saturday; the offer would have reopened the Strait of Hormuz and restarted nuclear talks.
How 9 sources split on this story
Where they split: The core dispute is whether Republican distancing from Trump is a substantive break or a carefully managed midterm posture that leaves his agenda intact.
Left coverage, 7 sources: The left argues that GOP candidates are making empty gestures — denouncing the war publicly while voting to continue it — and that the party has no real mechanism or leadership to break from Trump regardless of electoral damage.
Right coverage, 1 sources: The right frames Republican distancing as a coordinated, Trump-tolerated strategy to protect the majority, with candidates running district-specific races while remaining broadly aligned with the president's agenda.
What’s next: The White House is holding rallies in deep-red Oklahoma and Alabama. Republicans are pulling money from Senate races in North Carolina and Georgia.
- Ohio strategist Matt Dole told the Washington Examiner Trump will 'aggressively push back' on distancing Republicans after the election.
- Will rhetorical breaks from Trump by candidates like Rogers and Hinson translate into votes if the GOP retains its majority?
- If Democrats win one or both chambers, will Republican senators and representatives move to formally constrain Trump's war powers?
- How will Trump respond to Republicans who distanced themselves, once midterm pressure is gone?
