Rubio Invites Putin to G-20 Summit at Trump's Club
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Wednesday that the Trump administration has invited Putin to the G20 Leaders' Summit in Miami in December. Rubio spoke after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
- Putin last attended a G20 summit in person in 2019.
- Putin joined one G20 session virtually in 2023.
- December's summit is set for Trump National Doral golf club in Miami.
- Congress passed a Russia sanctions bill last week, giving Trump authority to levy 100% tariffs on buyers of Russian energy.
Why it matters: Putin's attendance would be his first in-person G20 appearance since launching the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. European officials previously refused to pose for a group photo with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov at a G20 economic meeting in August.
- Trump is pursuing a partial ceasefire focused on halting strikes on Russian oil refineries, citing record diesel prices in the US ahead of midterm elections.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would attend the summit and meet with Putin if he is present.
