Republicans Lose Ground With Latino Voters as Trump Dominates Party.
Trump's overall approval rating dropped to 32% — a career low — as Republican voters soured on the Iran war and rising costs. At the same time, mega-donors are directing unprecedented sums into GOP midterm campaigns.
- 32% overall approval is Trump's lowest recorded; Republican support fell to 73% from 82% in one week.
- More than a third of $2.8 billion raised this cycle comes from the 20 largest mega-donors.
- 60% of likely white voters without college degrees disapprove of Trump's handling of inflation.
- Only 26% of Americans approve of Trump's handling of the Iran war, per a CNN poll.
Why it matters: The spending split matters because it separates who funds the party from who votes for it. Donor money can buy ads; it cannot replace lost voters.
- Tech and crypto donors — including $18M from Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, $25M from Greg Brockman, and $99M+ through the Fairshake crypto PAC — are betting on GOP deregulation.
- 17% of Americans trust the federal government, down from over 70% in the postwar era, per Pew Research Center.
How 19 sources split on this story
Where they split: The core dispute is whether Republican candidates can successfully distance themselves from Trump on costs and the Iran war without losing his base — or whether voters will accept last-minute reversals.
Center coverage, 7 sources: The center focuses on the mechanical political challenge: Republican candidates are doing what survival requires, but strategists doubt late-breaking distance from Trump will persuade voters who have watched them support him for months.
Left coverage, 11 sources: The left frames billionaire donor support as evidence that Trump's coalition has narrowed to wealthy interests protecting themselves from regulation, while ordinary supporters abandon him over broken economic promises.
What’s next: Republican Senate candidates in Iowa, Michigan, and other states are already adjusting positions as polls tighten.
- National Review's Jim Geraghty warned fellow Republicans in the Washington Post that 'the clock is ticking' before electoral losses force a broader identity reckoning.
- Will Republican candidates who break with Trump on Iran and costs win back enough swing voters to offset depressed base turnout?
- How much of the billionaire donor surge is driven by policy expectations versus fear of Democratic regulation — and does the distinction change anything?
- If Democrats retake one or both chambers, will mega-donor-backed deregulation of AI and crypto stall, and how quickly?
