Trump Plans to Convert DC Arch Into Military Complex.

The FAA said Friday a proposed triumphal arch Trump wants to build near Arlington National Cemetery will not endanger aircraft. The agency requires the 250-foot structure to carry a permanent light on top and floodlight projectors aimed at its exterior.

• 250-foot arch would sit 3,000 feet from Reagan Washington National Airport.
• FAA reversed an earlier position: red obstruction lights are no longer required.
• Pilots must fly at least 780 feet above the site — 488 feet above the arch top.
• Construction cranes could reach 300–320 feet and run 20 hours daily for two to three years.

Why it matters: The arch is part of Trump's broader effort to reshape Washington's monumental landscape, alongside a new White House ballroom, a renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and an East Potomac Park redevelopment.

• Veterans have sued, arguing the arch would destroy the historic sightline between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
• A federal judge on September 4 ordered the administration to give 48 hours' notice before most site activity.

How 60 sources split on this story

Where they split: Coverage agrees on the facts but frames the FAA reversal differently: as a regulatory green light for a national monument versus a safety concession made under White House pressure.

What’s next: The FAA determination is open to challenge if petitions arrive by October 18.

• Veterans' lawsuit and the existing court order remain active constraints on construction.
• Will any party petition the FAA for review before the October 18 deadline?
• How will courts rule on the veterans' lawsuit challenging the arch's impact on the Arlington–Lincoln Memorial sightline?
• Will the FAA revisit crane safety requirements during the multi-year construction period?
