Trump Admin Threatens to Demolish Kennedy Center Over Name
The Kennedy Center's own projections show it expected to miss its fiscal 2026 revenue target by nearly $100 million, according to internal documents obtained by The Washington Post. Ticket sales and donations had already weakened when Trump took control of the board in early 2025, then fell more sharply after trustees voted in December to add his name to the building.
- $220 million was budgeted for fiscal 2026; projections by late May reached only $124 million.
- Earned revenue was on pace to miss budget by 70 percent; contributed revenue by 25 percent.
- 57 percent of tickets were sold or distributed in the center's three largest venues, down from 93 percent a year earlier.
- One internal report described pledges falling by 'more than 100 percent' from write-offs and donor withdrawals.
Why it matters: The financial documents put the center's public statements in direct tension with its internal forecasts. Center attorneys filed in federal court this week that without Trump's name and donor network, the complex faces 'a financial and structural death spiral' and could eventually be torn down.
- A Kennedy Center spokesperson attributed the shortfall to prior mismanagement and said Trump's name had attracted new donors; the center did not dispute the Post's account of the projections.
- Andrew Taylor of American University called the revenue drop 'a nosedive'; Jennifer Benoit-Bryan of SMU DataArts said the trajectory was 'remarkably different' from large arts institutions nationally, which generally stayed stable.
How 46 sources split on this story
Where they split: The central dispute is whether the financial collapse was caused by Trump's name change or by mismanagement that predated it — and whether restoring his name will fix the problem or deepen it.
Center coverage, 14 sources: The center frames this as a live legal and institutional standoff, placing the financial data alongside the board's competing claims and the court timeline without assigning blame.
Left coverage, 18 sources: The left frames the documents as proof that Kennedy Center leaders misled the public while privately watching a financially catastrophic takeover unfold — and calls the closure plan a cover-up of self-inflicted damage.
Right coverage, 14 sources: The right frames the revenue collapse as an ironic confirmation of a conservative argument — that politicizing a brand alienates its existing customers — and draws a direct parallel to the Bud Light boycott.
What’s next: Judge Cooper holds a hearing Thursday on Beatty's emergency motion challenging the August naming resolution.
- The center has not yet released audited financial statements for the fiscal year, now months overdue.
- Will the $258 million in federal renovation funding and Trump's claimed new donor base offset the earned-revenue collapse?
- How will Judge Cooper rule on whether the plaza renaming and facade inscriptions violate his earlier order?
- When will the center release its overdue audited financial statements, and what will they show?
