Justice Alito Commits to Another Supreme Court Term
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said he is staying on the bench for another term. The 76-year-old made the statement in a summertime interview with The Wall Street Journal.
- Alito said plainly: "Obviously I'm here for another term."
- NPR retracted a June 30 report that wrongly announced his departure.
- Some conservatives had urged Alito to retire so Trump could name a successor.
- Alito compared retirement pressure to watching vultures circle, citing life tenure.
Why it matters: A vacancy before the midterms would have let Trump appoint and potentially confirm a successor while Republicans hold the Senate. Alito's confirmation ends that window.
