Rep. Chuck Edwards Drops Re-election Bid After Censure Recommendation
The House Ethics Committee released a 20-page report Monday recommending the censure of Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) for persistent inappropriate conduct toward two female staffers.
- The bipartisan 10-member panel found Edwards gave both women lavish gifts.
- Edwards invited the two staffers to intimate dinners and vacations, the report found.
- He arranged a singer to perform at one staffer's birthday party from 'a special someone.'
- One staffer told a friend she was 'scared lowkey' by Edwards's behavior.
Why it matters: The committee found Edwards's conduct would lead a reasonable observer to interpret it as romantic or sexual in nature, even if unintended.
- Edwards denied any romantic or sexual intent, according to the report.
