Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Democratic primary despite divisions.
Michigan Democrats voted Tuesday in the most expensive Senate primary in the party's history, choosing between progressive Abdul El-Sayed and four-term Rep. Haley Stevens.
- $80 million in Democratic-side ad spending has flooded Michigan airwaves.
- $62.2 million in outside spending supported Stevens; $2.1 million supported El-Sayed.
- AIPAC's super PAC United Democracy Project spent nearly $32 million backing Stevens.
- El-Sayed leads by roughly 10 points in the RealClearPolitics polling average.
Why it matters: The seat is open because Sen. Gary Peters is retiring, and Democrats need to defend it to preserve any path to a Senate majority. The winner faces Rogers, who narrowly lost to Sen. Elissa Slotkin in 2024.
- An EPIC-MRA poll shows El-Sayed losing to Rogers 43%-46%, while Stevens leads Rogers 44%-42%.
- Michigan is home to the country's largest Arab American population, making the Israel policy dispute especially prominent.

Where they split: The core dispute is whether a progressive candidate can win a general election in a battleground state, or whether nominating one risks handing the seat to Republicans.
Center coverage, 24 sources: The center frames the race as the clearest gauge yet of whether the Democratic Party will prioritize ideological realignment or electability in a critical swing state.

What’s next: The primary winner must reunite a fractured Democratic coalition before November to defeat Rogers.
- Michigan also holds open gubernatorial primaries Tuesday on both sides.
- Can El-Sayed, if he wins the primary, win over the older and Black Detroit-area voters who anchored Stevens' support?
- Will the scale of AIPAC spending against El-Sayed galvanize or diminish progressive turnout in November?
- How will the result shape endorsements and positioning among prospective 2028 Democratic presidential candidates?
